Paul Gravett [original poster]: So where have all those Jack Kirby originals from the 1960s disappeared to recently off the internet and dealer's lists? And why?
Michael Hill: Now how about Ditko's?
Patrick Ford: One of the commenters questions the existence of a list of artwork returned to Kirby. Here is the list:
https://docs.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/new-york/nysdce/1:2010cv00141/356975/66/19.html
Patrick Ford: Ditko is on record he got two complete Spider-Man issues and most of a third issue. He's never commented on any DR. STRANGE pages he may have received.
Jim Van Heuklon: can you imagine Jack ever wishing Ben Grimm to utter the sentence: "Reed, you're Mister Fantastic again! Woweeeee"?
Patrick Ford: Jim, I often wonder if those people who praise Lee's dialogue have bothered to read any of it since they were eight. It's frequently moronic and clearly aimed at small children.
Jim Van Heuklon: it reads like golden age DC material. Especially All Star Comics.
Michael Hill: It's very accessible though.
Patrick Ford: Accessible to people who can stomach it.
J David Spurlock: Marvel wrestled with Kirby for years about the art returns -- trying to get him to cave for a tiny number of his pages but after he finally did, ( I understand) they ended up giving him much more than they had grieved him over for years. Do we have notation on the difference between what Kirby finally agreed to and what he actually received?
Patrick Ford: There is a cover letter and the agreement Kirby signed and then the nine page list of the pages returned to him. JUst keep scrolling.
J David Spurlock: Neither Kirby nor Wood received ANY of the Kirby-Wood material published by Marvel (Avengers covers, Tales of Suspense, X-Men cover...) with the exception of 12 interior FF 39 pages in which Wood only worked on the Daredevil and Murdock figures.
J David Spurlock: Has anyone compiled a list of what was stolen -- went missing -- from the time new-art returns started in the 1970s to when Jack finally received art about a decade later?
Patrick Ford: No one has made a list but it would certainly be possible. Just compare the Irene Vartanoff inventory to the pages Kirby got back.
There is a tiny bit of wiggle room in the equation because I believe Kirby went to the Marvelmania office and took some of his pages when he learned Don Wallace had them.
Patrick Ford: If Paul Gravett or anyone else is interested I have a huge amount of information in this post and the comments under the post.
