Why Jim Shooter became Editor in Chief in 1978 J David Spurlock 6 September 2016 Interesting that Archie Goodwin was replaced by Jim Shooter as Editor in Chief at Marvel, EXACTLY when the new copyright law went into effect. The law was updated by Congress to help freelance creators preserve their rights, but Marvel immediately tried to find ways to curtail the new law by forcing freelancers to sign away all the rights the law afforded them. The timing suggests that Archie Goodwin — who was beloved and greatly respected by freelancers — resigned because he wanted no part in Marvel's plan to usurp creator rights and circumvent the law.
