"Stan has filled entire chapters giving credit." (but only for art, not writing) Patrick Ford January 24, 2018 This post concerns a common sort of thing which causes me to wonder if people are willfully ignorant or just plain stupid. At another FB group someone posted the following comment concerning Mark Evanier. "The one thing that I thought was interesting is that they introduced him as the writer of Groo the Wanderer and Evanier corrected them and said he was the cowriter with Sergio. It struck me that Stan Lee never did that. When he was called the writer or creator, he just took the credit." In reply another member commented: "Not true. Stan has filled entire chapters giving credit. Enough already." The same person followed up by commenting: "Honestly, read ANY long-form interview Stan has given in the last 50 years. Read ANY of his Marvel ORIGIN books, or any number of Stan's Soapbox entries, in which Stan, without exception, has credited artists to the point of self-effacement." The two replies have nothing at all to do with what was said about writing credit. It is part of Lee's approach to the issue to lavish praise on "his artists." However there has never been any dispute about the artwork when it comes to Kirby and Lee. Lee has never claimed he drew the FANTASTIC FOUR or THOR. The Kirby v. Lee dispute has to do with writing. Which is exactly what the original comment said in reference to Evanier and Lee. The same is true of Lee's disputes with Ditko and Wood. It's the writing credit and pay for the writing which was the nature of the dispute. It has nothing to do with artwork. How is it possible so many people are unable to grasp that well documented fact ?
