Roy Thomas: another eye witness who was not there
Patrick Ford
13 March 2017
Over the weekend at a NYC comic book convention Roy Thomas participated on a Kirby Tribute Panel along with Rand Hoppe and others.
Roy Thomas confirmed during the panel that he was "not particularly" present at the moment of creation for the characters. In fact the only instance he describes is the one where Lee was surprised upon seeing Kirby's Silver Surfer pages. An incident where Kirby was not even at the office. Thomas also said that the Nat Freedland interview with Lee at the Marvel office took place on a Friday in December of 1965. Thomas largely confirms what Kirby told Steve Sherman about the incident.
Here is the clip of Thomas speaking as well as Steve Sherman's account of what Kirby told him.
Kirby bits begin around 8:58.

Rand Hoppe: It was a panel about the two 1917 babies, Will Eisner and Jack Kirby.
Patrick Ford: So who asks Thomas if he was there at the moment of creation for any of the characters?
Patrick Ford: Another point of interest I don't think I have heard before is Thomas was only present for a fraction of the interview. He says he was called in, "for the last part of it."
Patrick Ford: Which sounds charitably like 1/3.
Patrick Ford: Here's the thing with Thomas. He speaks as if he is a witness when as to Lee and Kirby he is almost always just reporting what Stan Lee told him, not what he saw.
Patrick Ford: This would all be fine if he only would say, "Well what Stan told me is this..."
